Times: The Next-Gen RSS Reader

RSS reading is a task that I perform often to keep up with the news - technology news, gaming news, design tips, and even webcomics. Currently I use the fantastic free reader NetNewsWire, which syncs up with syncs up with an online service called NewsGator. NewsGator fetches my articles all the time, so when I want to check them, the only process done is a quick download from the NewsGator site - no fetching around various feeds. And I can access it from a browser or iPhone/iPod touch, which is excellent on the go.

A couple months ago, I saw a brief screenshot for an upcoming Mac RSS reader called Times.

It looked something like this:

I dismissed it as an innovative and novel, yet probably impractical and unusable eye-candy application. See, Macs have this whole “Delicious Generation” thing going on in which a new wave of young application designers make flashy, yet functionally useless and poorly supported applications. So it’s natural to be skeptical about any newcomer.

Today, The Apple Blog posted some new information about Times, which is now coming in five days. It completely changed my mind. This RSS reader looks really good. It emulates a real newspaper and seems to do so effectively.

I look forward to trying it out in a few days, hopefully.
